Dieting while preggo!

Alrighty folks!

I met with my OBGYN this past week. I expressed my concerns about my weight/health with her. And we discussed what I should do. This is what I suggested and she was 100% supportive.

1. GO MOSTLY VEGAN DIET: My goal is to cut out as much processed and and animal products as possible. I want to incorporate juicing into my diet and have occasional fish or poultry. Michael and I feel this is the best possible lifestyle for us.

REASON: Michael has Chrons Diease and has had it for years. Before I was pregnant he ate right, with little to no processed foods. Then I had cravings, and we just got into the habit of fast food, pizza, and processed junk. The second main reason is my father died of Colon Cancer a few years ago. The fact that my children's father and grandfather have had/have bowel issues is a big concern of mine. I really want them to have the best opportunity to be healthy.

2. WORKOUT: My OBGYN has given permission to work out while pregnant.

REASON: I'm overweight from my last pregnancy. I wasn't exactly skinny when I got pregnant with Quentin. I started at 180. Now I'm 211. My doctor doesn't want me to gain more than 11 lbs this pregnancy. Sayyy what? So yes, exercising is going to be apart of my life right now. As long as I can handle it, I can work out. Do what my body can do.

3. MAMA BLUES/DEPRESSION: It's no surprise that I'm depressed. I have such a kickass doctor. I spent 3 hours with her discussing our plans for this pregnancy, and I mentioned that I think I'm depressed. She totally understood and said she rather me take B Complex vitamins everyday than anxiety meds. I agree! So in 4 weeks when I see her again, if I'm still bumming it we might try meds. Might.

.... Michael and I cleaned out the refrigerator, cleaned out all processed, all box and canned foods.

I know a lot of people disagree with pregnant women losing weight. I'm not being unrealistic with this. I don't have a set number of pounds to lose in my head. I will be meeting with my doctor regularly and if she feels like I need to stop, I will. I'm not doing portion control, if I want 12 strawberries it's better than half of cake.

So if you have any awesome juice, veg recipes, please let me know! I will be updating my process as much as I can. And I know it's going to be hard at first. Esp since I'm pregnant, so keep the comments positive please.

Michael wanted the V8, couldn't argue with him, he gave up a lot.

This is me in all my big' ole glory. I'm 11 weeks pregnant, and I just look fat. I have huge hips, fat chin, blubber arms, and a hippo butt.
I'm 211.6
5ft 2

  1. Congrats lady! I'm super impressed with your plan. I don't have any experience with vegan or juicing but it sounds fun! Have you eaten tofu? It's super easy to cook and really good.

Regarding work-outs, have you tried Zumba? It can be for any level of fitness, and once you get the moves down, the muscle memory kicks in and it's a lot easier! I taught Zumba classes for nearly my entire pregnancy, and it kept me in good shape.

ALSO.... we have the same due date for baby #2 :) So exciting! I'm friends with Jess's friend Heather.

    1. Oh and have you heard of chia seeds? They are really really good for you, and you can put them in smoothies or juices. My husband chugs a glass of them before his morning workout.

  2. This is great Sam! No one could argue with these changes. They are well thought out, healthy, and dr approved. I started just walking every day and my miood has improved drastically. Congrats on the bebe and congrats on this too!!

  4. Hey there. I am a random person from the Internet (followed pinterest to your sister's blog to you) but you can do it! I had three kids in a year (a boy in sept 2010, twin (!!!!) girls in August 2011). It was tough at first, but you will be so incredibly strong on the other side of this, you won't know until you get there. There were tough days, sad nights and I was depressed from it all... But my girls are six months old and, though some days stil stink, it is amazing the experience and it affirms that I am one kick ass mom! It will be the same for you. My advice is to find the few things you know you NEED to keep yourself sane. For me it was: hot coffee, hair dye (lame, right?), house hunters international, and dark chocolate. Oh, and a new blanket to snuggle with when I could get sleep. On tough tough tough days I took solace in that. Stockpile what you love and make sure you spend 15 minutes on you after #2 gets here. You are going to be in for a crazy, fun ride. Few are like us and we are pretty damn amazing! All the best, Julie.

  6. Good for you! I gained 60 lbs during my pregnancy- I had twins but they were preemies each weighing a little over 3 lbs so there was no reason for the extra weight gain!
Do what's best for you and what makes you feel good.
Also- if you are feeling depressed and the doctor gives you the go ahead don't hesitate to take anxiety meds. The meds changed my life.

  9. I'm super impressed with your goals and upbeat attitude. I'm also glad you have such a helpful obgyn. I try to eat only whole foods too because I've been battling a systemic yeast infection. I like gluten-free goddess blog a lot. A quick google search will bring up her blog. I alo feature a healthy recipe on my blog each week.

  11. I think you're adorable. But I think it's awesome that you are wanting to get healthier. I don't think there is anything wrong with that as long as you are being safe about it (not working out excessively, not eating, etc). Love reading your blog : )

  12. good for you! i have been a vegetarian for 2.5 years and am mostly mindful of eating lots of whole foods (um, ignore my last post haha) but anyways, i did a three day juice cleanse before and my favorite recipe was green apples, carrots, and kale (a shit ton of the last two) - sometimes i would add cucumbers or celery to that recipe but those two are pretty strong for me to have so often. good luck!! :)

  13. I'm looking forward to seeing how you do.  I'm almost in the exact same boat except that my daughter is almost 2 so it's pretty piss poor that I didn't loss the weight for my current pregnancy.

  16. Good for you on getting healthy!
    I am 5'6 and 260 lbs.
I wish I had listened to my doc when I was pregnant. I started my last pregnancy at 180 and ended about where I am now.

I need to start taking my diet seriously.

I believe you can do it and you will have another healthy baby!.

For some reason I think it's a boy haha.

  17. I am dieting and have a pretty awesome shake recipe! I've been really into using dates as a sugar substitute when realistic, and completely adore this filling protein shake that clocks in at roughly 520 calories:

     - 1 cup soy milk/almond milk/skim milk (I used soy)
     - 5 dates, pitted (got mine in a bag from Whole Foods)
     - 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter (I stood for 15 min comparing jars to get the lowest calorie one I could find)
     - 1 frozen banana

Throw items in blender and blend until creamy. You can also add a little ice if you want, or another half of banana if you want it to be a lot thicker. It is so delicious and really filling. As a healthy snack (I'm a frequent snacker) I've been munching on roasted almonds. We bought a bag of plain almonds in bulk and have been playing with seasoning them ourselves. This last batch we threw into a skillet on low heat and tossed with a little soy sauce and cayenne pepper to taste. They are SO GOOD! And a much healthier snack than something like fast food.

Good luck! It's all about finding the delicious dieting shortcuts ;)

  18. One more thing - I love this recipe site and just did a quick search for 'vegan' and it shows about 30+ results:

  19. you go mama. remember it's not necessarily 'dieting' since you are planning to gain 11 pounds for the baby-- and for your ht/wt that is healthy! good luck on being healthy as possible. I am 14 weeks myself and it is hard to say no to the processed/easy stuff!

  20. You are a realistic and a level headed lady.  It's not exactly mega healthy, but if you want a beetroot fix, I recommend Beetroot and Dark Chocolate cake. I've used the recipe below a couple of times, and it's so lovely!  The beetroots and dark choc are healthy too!!!!!!! YES THEY ARE! Okay, I'm sorry, it's not a green leaf smoothie or anything, but you have to have a treat, and when you do, this should be it. :)

  21. good for you! it sounds like you have a great approach: a doctor-supervised plan that is centered around healthy eating instead of dieting (not eating). my best tip for you is to check out the motivational film "fat, sick, and nearly dead" on netflix instant if you have it. obvi, juicing detox is not a safe option for you at this time, but it's still a great motivating flick. also, when i don't feel like eating healthy, i head to whole foods. there's so much good stuff there, it makes it easy. good luck!
